Work-Life Balance: Why You Need to Maintain One

Finding a work-life balance can be challenging, especially if you have a demanding job. Your hours may be the standard 9-5 on paper, but the work might say otherwise. It’s normal that some days will be longer, but if it’s an everyday occurrence, you might need to step back and prioritize.

If your place of employment does not encourage a healthy balance between the two, it might not be the best place for you to work. While work and career are important, so is your personal time and life. We are granted one life to live, and at that time, you must do things for yourself, not just your employer.

The most important aspect of a healthy work-life balance is maintaining your mental health. If you enter the office every day and feel stressed, anxious, or maybe even burned out, you are jeopardizing your mental well-being.

Having a healthy balance allows you to enjoy the little things that life has to offer. Maybe it’s time to take up a hobby to relieve some stress, or even try a new activity. Whatever it is, this time is precious and will keep your stress down and your head clear.

Prioritizing is one of the best ways that you can maintain a balance. Each week you should pick three things unrelated to work to do, that make you happy. Do you love going to the gym, or to the movies, or maybe you have a favorite restaurant? Whatever activities make you happy are the ones that you should focus on. These different things allow you to focus on the fun things life has to offer, rather than the stress of your job. If you feel that you just can’t find the time, then it’s probably time for your job to STOP ruling your life.

Remember, having boundaries is ok. There is no reason to feel obligated to answer and email or text past your standard working hours. If you feel inclined to do so at the dinner table, or while watching a show together with your family, take a step back. It’s important to understand that nothing is more important than your personal time. Think about it, you spend 40 hours a week at your job. At that time, all the work that needs to be done should get done. And if not, it is next week’s responsibility.

It’s important to keep in mind that this balance will not be maintained overnight. Learning to maintain any kind of balance is something that is a work in progress. Good things take time and practice. Start with small steps that will eventually translate into the perfect balance.

Remember, saying no is a perfectly ok thing to do, and saying no does not show a sign of weakness, but rather a true sign of strength. Having the ability to put yourself first is a fantastic thing to have.

Being able to achieve this perfect balance is something that we all work towards. And with enough time and willpower, the perfect balance is within your reach. Always remember your worth and that your happiness is most important. If an employer doesn’t value personal life, it’s probably time to start your search elsewhere!
