Eight Ways That Push Yourself To Think Out Of The Box
So have you been asked to think out of the box for work? Or, you really wanted a new idea for a project? Don’t worry! Thinking out of the box, like any other skill, comes with practice. We are always told to think out of the box, but how exactly do we do that? How do we cultivate the ability to look at things differently from the way we normally look at things? Think how to deal with problems in a creative way.
Here are eight ways to amp up your out-of-the-box thinking skills. Make an effort to push your thinking up and beyond every now and again. The talents you develop may come in handy the next time you face a situation everybody knows how to solve.
Study Another Industry
Go to a library, and pick up a trade magazine from an industry other than your own. Grab a few books from the library and learn about how things are done in other industries. You might find that people in other industries face similar kinds of problems, and they have developed really different ways of dealing with them.
Find links between your own industry and the new one. Doing so, you might find the basis of innovative partnership in the future. Moreover, it’s always better to seek extra knowledge.
Change Your Space
It is important to get away from all your typical routines in order to foster creativity. The idea of changing your routine is a common one amongst successful and creative thinkers. This means that you either create a specific ritual around creativity, or you simply find a way to take a break.
Create a psychological distance between your normal routine and the time for your creativity. Go for a walk or watch the sun come up in the morning, or indulge yourself in things you like. This helps in boosting your creativity and get those innovative juices flowing.
Take A Class
Learning a new topic will not only teach you a new set of skills. It will also prep you up for a new way of looking at and making sense of different aspects to your everyday life. Learning something new can help you look at the things you already know how to do from a completely different angle.
This in turn will help expand both, how you look at problems and the breadth of possible solutions you can come up with.
Throwing out a ton of different ideas, especially the ones that might seem off the wall can be a great strategy to pick up a few really good ideas. Brainstorming helps to open up your thinking so that you aren’t stuck in the same old patterns.
The brainstorming isn’t about what is or isn’t feasible. Avoid limiting yourself when brainstorming. This is the time when all kinds of ideas are welcome, no matter how silly or unworkable it may sound.
Read A Novel In An Unfamiliar Genre
Reading is one of the best mental stimulators in our society. But it’s equally easy to get into the rut. Try reading something you had never tried. If you read literary fiction, try a mystery or science fiction novel.
Pay attention to the story and the way the author deals with problems. If you read a lot of hard-boiled detective novels, try a romantic book.
Reconceptualize The Problem
A part of finding creative solutions and ideas stems from looking at the problem in a new way. Looking at something the new way allows you to look at new possible solutions that you might have not otherwise considered.
This can be done by turning the problem upside down. This can be done literally or figuratively; turning a figure upside down makes it easier to draw. Remember, your brain has to look at it in terms of it’s making rather than what it thinks should be there.
Surprised? Yes, daydreaming helps you make connections and form patterns and recall information. Give yourself time to daydream. Turn off the T.V, computer and your phone. If you are constantly plugged into distractions, it will be much harder for your brain to rest and make connections.
Mostly, you daydream while on a walk or in the shower. This is one reason going for a walk or taking a shower can be so conducive to creative thinking. Daydreaming before getting up from the bed, or in the night before you fall asleep helps in many ways.
If you are having difficulty thinking out of the box, it’s time to give yourself some basic parameters. This may seem like it would hinder creativity, but if you set the right parameters you will find that it actually opens things up for you.
