Eight Creative Ways To Have More Fun At Work
The words “fun” and “work” should not be antonyms. But for so many people they are. The first step to having fun at work is believing that “fun and “work belong in the same sentence. You pull up to your regular parking space at work. What’s the first thought that crosses your mind as you shut the car door behind you and make your way to the office? Is the stress already starting to build? Is there a little lump of dread growing in your stomach? Or do you experience a little rush of happiness at the thought of the fun you are about to have?
The last scenario is unfortunately not the norm at most companies, and it’s hurting employee performances. This is probably because the traditional wisdom states the following: “Work is not supposed to be fun. That’s why it’s called work”. However, research shows that this dismal view of work is completely wrong.
Imagine waking up each morning looking forward to the fun that you are going to have to work that day! This can become reality. How? By coming up with new ways to have fun at work. Here are eight ideas to help you get started.
Arrange A Communal Lunch
Everybody eats, so why not eat together and get to know each other in the process. You might discover a new place, a new food item, or introduce yourself to somebody new. Eating as a team may help coworkers foster deeper work relationships.
This in turn can boost productivity. Eating together has a long, primal tradition as a kind of social glue. Again, make sure that you are not eating other people’s food.
Decorate Your Office
Nobody likes white walls, white ceilings, and soulless lighting, right? Just because it’s an office, doesn’t mean it should look like a boring office. A nice work environment might even convince you to look forward to work.
When you spend such a significant amount of time in one space, it’s important that it reflects not only the culture of the company, but the people who make it run. Sometimes taking meetings outside the work also helps.
Work doesn’t have to be all business, all the time. Of Course you need to maintain your professionalism – but that doesn’t mean you can’t crack a smile (or a joke). Happiness is contagious.
When you smile or laugh, others around you will do the same and your office would be an allround happier place to be. We all have a good sense of when the other is too deep in concentration to be bothered. But otherwise, hearing something they could get a kick out of, would make their day brighter.
Have A Sense Of Humour
If you want to have fun at work, then you have to stop thinking that being professional means being serious all the time. Take a moment to laugh at funny things at the office. Share a funny story with your coworker occasionally. If you stop seeing work as a no-fun zone, then you will open yourself to endless opportunities.
If your office environment is pretty fun and open, you can even play harmless pranks on your co-workers, like placing a rubber spider on their desks, once in a while. Just make sure you know them well enough for this to not send the wrong message.
Know That Happy Hours Are Part Of The Culture
We can have fun outside the office right? Hitting a cafe after work is a great way to boost morale, and bring your team together around things that are, well, not work.
Just don’t overdo it.
Generate Positive Energy
Work on being more positive if you want your workplace to be more fun. Sure, everyone loves to complain about work, but if you get into the habit of constantly complaining about work with all of your co-workers, then you will be headed in a downward spiral.
Though it can help to vent about the things that can bother you. Try talking about a new innovation to a coworker you like at work for a change, and see how much this improves your level of happiness and your overall mood.
Compliment Someone Everyday
Work on genuinely complimenting at least one of your coworkers each day. This can help set a positive tone to your day.
When a coworker tells you that they liked the idea you pitched in the morning meeting, or the new painting you put up in the office, it makes you feel good, right? So you should do the same to others. You will actually feel just as good giving the compliment as you do receiving it.
Don’t Try Too Hard To Have Fun
Though it is important to have fun at work, some studies show that if you try too hard to have fun, you will actually be making yourself miserable. One study in Australia found that workers in an environment where they felt pressured to smile, look happy all the time and participate in “fun” events actually felt stifled and stressed out by having to look happy all the time.
This is to say, you should try to have more fun, but not so much that you feel like you are putting too much pressure on yourself.
And with that, there’s only one more thing left (for you) to say
